Every year from September 15 through October 15, Hispanic Latinx Heritage Month recognizes and celebrates the rich cultures, traditions, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities across the United States.

It's a time to reflect on the individuals, families, and generations who have helped shape our communities through innovation, leadership, service, entrepreneurship, art, education, and countless other contributions. It is also an opportunity to learn from one another and appreciate the diverse experiences and traditions that make our communities stronger. 

The Meaning Behind the Dates

You may have noticed that Hispanic Latinx Heritage Month doesn't begin on the first day of September. That's because September 15 holds special significance as the independence anniversary of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18. 

The month-long observance was created to recognize the lasting impact of Hispanic and Latinx Americans and to celebrate the many cultures and traditions that continue to enrich our nation. 

Celebrating Diverse Traditions and Perspectives 

The term "Hispanic" encompasses individuals whose heritage traces back to Spanish-speaking countries, while "Latinx" generally refers to people with roots in Latin America. Together, these communities represent a vibrant mosaic of cultures, traditions, languages, and experiences. 

From music and literature to food, art, business, and public service, Hispanic and Latinx cultures have influenced nearly every aspect of American life. Hispanic Latinx Heritage Month is a reminder that diversity strengthens communities by bringing together unique perspectives, ideas, and traditions.
