Mindful, cautious, strong-willed, resolute, social, playful, clever

The elephant is a force to be reckoned with in the animal kingdom. With its massive trunk, powerful tusks and huge appetite, an elephant can renovate its home on the savanna faster than the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition crew. That’s good because an elephant herd is one big family!

Each herd has a leading lady—Ma Tembo in Mtoto’s case. This giantess knows how to get to all the coolest spots on the savanna. An elephant knows that dust and mud baths feel great, but they can’t keep you cool when the midday sun starts glaring. So good watering holes are a ‘hot’ commodity.

Like other kids, young elephants are constantly testing their limits (and the herd’s patience). The girls can create enough drama to set everyone’s ears flapping and get away with it, but young boys get kicked out of the herd at the first sign of trouble. Don’t worry, though, there’s always a bachelor around to teach young males about the single life.

The elephant is instantly recognizable by its size, long trunk and ivory tusks. With loose, wrinkly gray skin and soft footpads, the elephant seems to spend all day in its pajamas. Low rumbles or high trumpets convey its playful and sometimes cranky moods.
