Star Wars fans around the world celebrate a day that started as a pun on the phrase “May the Force Be With You” and is now acknowledged as “May the 4th Be With You” by cast members and fans in English speaking countries! (The phrase doesn’t always translate well into different languages, but May 4th is widely known as “Star Wars Day” throughout the world).
Growing up watching the films and cartoons, attending Star Wars conventions, fan events, and even naming my dog after the beloved Yoda, you can say Star Wars has been a huge “force” in my life for a long time. These films have given me an appreciation for the magic of cinema and storytelling. There is no other musical film score that gives me goosebumps the moment those first few notes begin in a dark theater. The movies are both a nostalgic reminder of our childhoods and a teaching tool for the next generation – that there is no limit to what they can achieve if they believe in themselves.
Stepping onto the planet of Batuu, in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Walt Disney World (and its counterpart at the Disneyland Resort) is a dream come true for any Star Wars nerd like myself. Walt Disney Imagineering did a phenomenal job creating an immersive world for fans to pilot the Millennium Falcon, take on the dark side in Rise of the Resistance, or simply come together as a fan community. Building my custom lightsaber, personalized R2 astromech droid, sipping the blue milk and sitting in Oga’s Cantina are memories I will forever cherish, and I look forward to being able to live out my inner Jedi forever.
I think fans embrace Star Wars not only because of its stories and characters but also its message of hope, faith, and fighting for what is good in the world. It teaches you to look for the good in people in the darkest of times, and in the picture of the mythical “force,” we see it is us that binds the universe together.
“May the 4th be with you, always”
